(INDIANAPOLIS) - Before heading out on a golf cart, ATV, dirt bike or other recreational vehicle this summer, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles wants buyers and sellers to check whether the vehicle needs to be titled or registered.

The BMV says knowing the rules can help prevent fraudulent sales, keep owners in compliance with Indiana law and avoid surprises when buying or operating a vehicle.

Golf Carts

Golf carts are exempt from Indiana registration and titling requirements.

However, some cities, towns and counties may require local registration if golf carts are operated on public roadways. Those local registrations are not handled through the BMV.

Low Speed Vehicles

Low Speed Vehicles, or LSVs, are not the same as golf carts.

LSVs must be titled and registered in Indiana.

Unlike golf carts, LSVs are electrically powered vehicles that do not exceed 25 miles per hour and are equipped with many of the same safety features required on passenger vehicles.

Off-Road Vehicles

Off-road vehicles must be registered in Indiana.

If purchased after December 31, 2009, they must also be titled.

That includes ATVs, dirt bikes, minibikes, recreational off-road vehicles and snowmobiles.

Mopeds And Scooters

Motor Driven Cycles, commonly known as mopeds or scooters, must be registered but do not require a title.

Under Indiana law, Motor Driven Cycles are defined by cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cubic centimeters.

Other Exempt Vehicles

Several other leisure vehicles do not require registration or titles in Indiana.

That includes go-karts, electric scooters, electric wheelchairs, hoverboards, Segways, motorized bicycles, motorized tricycles and motorized coolers.

Watercraft

The BMV is also reminding boat owners that all watercraft operating on Indiana waterways must be titled and registered and display valid watercraft decals unless exempt.

More information about vehicle registration and titling requirements is available through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
